It is with great sadness that we honour the passing of Peter Lacy, a cherished life member of Ōwhango Alive, who passed away on January 3rd, 2025. Peter’s enthusiasm and dedication to conservation have left an indelible mark not only on our organization but also on the community he loved so much.
Peter was instrumental in the early efforts of Ōwhango Alive, crafting trap boxes for the lines and placing traps throughout the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve. His dedication went beyond the ordinary—often checking the traps almost daily. Peter’s steadfast commitment to predator control work was matched only by his infectious passion for the cause. He had an ability to connect with people, chatting with visitors on the tracks, sharing stories, and encouraging others to get involved in conservation efforts.
In December 2024, Peter was awarded Life Membership in recognition of his commitment and invaluable contributions. It was a testament to his enduring spirit and the countless hours he devoted to protecting our native wildlife and preserving the beauty of the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve for future generations.
Beyond his work with Ōwhango Alive, Peter was a pillar of the Ōwhango Village, taking on various roles and always lending a hand wherever needed. His warm sense of humour, love of storytelling, and penchant for breaking into song brought joy to those fortunate enough to know him.
Peter’s loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege of working alongside him and calling him a friend. While his presence will be sorely missed, his legacy will continue to inspire us as we carry forward the work he held so dear.
