Over the last couple of weeks, Ōwhango Alive has been invited to spend time with Ōwhango Primary School students, to share our story and knowledge about the birds that reside in the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve and what we can do to protect them.
The students, led by Tōtara class teacher Siobhan McKenna, were very knowledgeable about our local birdlife (including bats), what predates on them and what we can do to help them.
Liz Brooker from Project Tongariro also attended, adding to the education and fun on the day.
Bird counts were conducted, traps were checked (rats, a stoat and a weasel were caught)…. their excited faces captured the moments.
We also talked about litter and the damage it can cause.
