Ōwhango Alive has reached a major conservation milestone—10,000 predators trapped! This incredible achievement happened on 26 January 2025 on the ‘Peter Lacy’ trapping line, thanks to the commitment of our volunteers Robert and Annemie Peter.
Our Journey
Back in January 2013, Ōwhango Alive started with just 20 DOC200 traps and three volunteers. Fast forward to today, and we now have over 300 predator traps strategically placed throughout the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve and nearby areas. These traps help protect native wildlife, giving our forests a chance to thrive once again.
More Than Just Trapping
Beyond predator control, our dedicated volunteers regularly hold working bees to remove invasive species like blackberry and privet. We’ve also planted over 1,500 native trees in cleared areas, restoring biodiversity and strengthening the ecosystem.
Be Part of the Next Milestone!
While 10,000 predators trapped is a fantastic achievement, there’s still work to do! We’re always looking for more volunteers to help with trapping, weed removal, and native tree planting. Whether you can give an hour or a day, every effort counts.
Get involved today! Contact us and be part of the movement to protect our native wildlife.
