Ōwhango Alive Summer Update 2025 | Community Conservation in Action
Ōwhango Alive continues to grow in strength and impact, with increasing volunteer involvement across trapping, working bees, and community events. The past season saw record support for the annual Ōwhango Alive calendar, with 300 sold and funds directly supporting conservation work across the rohe. Highlights included a well-attended World Rivers Day celebration at the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve, where more than 60 locals came together for planting, learning, and the unveiling of new interpretive signage.
Trapping efforts remain highly effective, with a significant increase in predator catches through spring and early summer, supported by new AT220 traps, improved training, and dedicated volunteers maintaining trap lines throughout the area. Trail camera monitoring has also provided valuable insights into predator activity, helping refine trap placement and lure strategies.
Infrastructure improvements were completed with support from DOC, including upgrades to the Lagoon boardwalk, while ongoing fundraising and trap-building efforts continue to strengthen the network. With strong community backing, new volunteers stepping up, and upcoming workshops planned, Ōwhango Alive remains focused on protecting native species and restoring local ecosystems through collective action.
