January: Ohinetonga Bat Evenings
On 11 January 2024, the first of two Ohinetonga Bat Evenings took place. Led by ecologist Luke Easton, participants gathered at the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve to observe native pekapeka (long-tailed bats) in their natural habitat. This educational event offered insights into the behaviors and conservation needs of these endangered species. The second session occurred on 18 January 2024, providing another opportunity for attendees to engage with and learn about New Zealand’s unique bat populations.
September: World Rivers Day
Celebrated on 29 September 2024, World Rivers Day featured activities emphasizing the importance of river ecosystems. The event highlighted the community’s dedication to preserving the health of local waterways, integral to both environmental sustainability and cultural heritage.
Throughout the year, Ōwhango Alive continued its mission to protect and enhance the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve, the Whakapapa River, and the Ōwhango village. Efforts included plant and animal pest control, public awareness campaigns, and fostering strong relationships with local communities and relevant agencies.
