In 2023, Ōwhango Alive continued its mission to protect the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve and engage the community. Several key events strengthened conservation efforts and raised awareness.
In January, the year started with an Ohinetonga Bat Evening on 13 January. Led by Ranger Luke, the event gave participants a rare chance to observe pekapeka (long-tailed bats) in their natural habitat. Attendees gathered at Ohinetonga Domain, then walked to Tawa Track at sunset to watch the bats’ flight corridors. This hands-on experience deepened understanding of native species conservation.
By March, the team released its Autumn Newsletter, detailing recent achievements and future goals. It highlighted conservation work, pest control progress, and upcoming events.
In September, the focus shifted to predator control with the Pestival event on 24 September at Brocks Farm. The event featured workshops, interactive displays, and community discussions about pest management. Locals learned practical skills to support predator control efforts and protect native wildlife.
As the year ended, December marked the launch of the 2024 Ōwhango Alive Calendar. Featuring local photography, it captured the area’s natural beauty while raising funds for conservation projects. The response was overwhelming—270 copies sold, the highest ever.
Throughout 2023, Ōwhango Alive remained committed to biodiversity protection, habitat restoration, and community education. With ongoing pest control, tree planting, and conservation awareness, the group strengthened its impact in the Ohinetonga Scenic Reserve and beyond.
